Small Dogs Are Fun Too!
By Digi on May 22, 2009 in Society
Growing up on a farm, I was always under the assumption that small dogs were yappy, uncontrollable and just generally a nuisance. I much preferred the bigger breeds, like a Great Dane or a mastiff and
I tended to stayed away from any of the smaller breeds. So you can imagine how surprised I was to discover that small dogs can be lovable and just as great a pet as the larger breeds. I came to this realization when I was dating my wife and went to meet her parents. Their family dog was a Miniature Schnauzer, a breed I was totally unfamiliar with. But because it’s such a small dog, I immediately thought it was going to be nippy and very mouthy.
Of course I was wrong. Smokey was very friendly and loved to get belly scratches. Not once in all of the years that we visited her parents have I ever felt like I could end up with my nose chewed off. In fact, when we got married two years ago, I got my wife a mini Schnauzer as a wedding gift. Of course, I also have my large dog, but our mini is a great pet, too.

I have a soft spot for Schnauzers anyway, but I also like the minis. They’re pretty calm for little dogs with friendly personalities.

Personally, I love little dogs. I live in an apartment and can’t have one of the large breeds, and I really love having a dog around. I wouldn’t trade my mini Doberman Pinscher for anything. She’s my best friend.

I wasn’t a fan of little dogs for years. I thought they were too yappy and too stupid. But, after I met my friend’s mini Schnauzer, I was sold. It’s a great little dog and I want to get one, too.

One of the most fun things about little dogs is sneaking them into places where they’re not supposed to be, like parties or restaurants. Most people don’t mind a cute little dog even if they are eating and drinking.

Every year, I take my mini Schnauzer and dress him up in different costumes to do a seasonal calendar. I dress him as Santa for Christmas, Uncle Sam for July. I even put him in a little sash and a diaper for January. My husband thinks I’m nuts, but I think it’s a hoot!
