The View from My ‘Office’ Today

One of the things I love about having my own business and working from home is that I work whenever and from wherever I please.  Right now I’m working out at the barn where my horse is stabled, and this is the view beyond my laptop screen:

I often have aspiring writers ask me how to start your own business.  It varies depending on what kind of business opportunity you are looking for.  For example, as a freelance writer and copywriter, I didn’t need to get financing in order to start my own business — I just had to get my name and resume out there.  Of course, it was more difficult and took more time than that — more than a year of applying for freelance jobs and submitting queries before I finally had a steady stream of work — but the point is that I didn’t have a lot of startup expenses.

Other businesses, however, typically have startup expenses that you will need to either be able to fund yourself, or get financing for in the form of a small business loan.  For example, even if all you are doing is starting an eBay business, you will need to have money to buy merchandise to resell (if you want to be a reseller) or set up a store (if you want to resell other people’s stuff for a commission, known as an eBay drop off store).

Of course, not all of these businesses are the kind that you can do anywhere, anytime, but what matters is owning your own business and being your own boss.  Trust me, there is nothing in the world quite like it!
