Kitchen First, Cooking School Second

You are in the midst of figuring out what you want to do with the rest of your life. You know that you should probably go to college. You have thought through some of your interests and think that perhaps you should get culinary training at one of the nation’s cooking schools. You might be right but you may want to consider getting experience in the kitchen before you go ahead and start sending off those applications to every culinary institute in the country.

Cooking in the restaurant business is not something that you can imagine in your own head and be able to know whether or not you would like it. You have to get in there and get hands-on experience in the restaurant industry before you’ll know if you’re really suited to cooking on a level bigger than your own home kitchen. This isn’t to say that you have to spend years working your way through restaurants to see if you want to be a chef but it does indicate that you should consider getting at least a part-time job in a restaurant for awhile to get a feel for what this kind of work would entail and whether or not you really want to commit to going to school for it.
